Room is a novel written in 2010 by Emma Donoghue, an Irish-Canadian author. This story is told through the eyes of a five-year-old boy, Jack, who is being
held captive in a small shed in a back yard along with his mother, who we know as Ma. Donoghue originally conceived the idea for this story after the Fritzl case.

The novel was longlisted for the 2011 Orange Prize and won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize regional prize; it was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2010, and was shortlisted for the 2010 Rogers
Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the 2010 Governor General’s Awards.
The film adaptation, also titled Room, was released in November 2015, starring Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards, with Larson winning the Academy Award for Best Actress.
